Fixed Gear Bikes Banned in Japan?

It seems to be rumor at the moment but I can image that they would…It seems governments around the world are taking action against these ‘dangerous’ bikes. It’s ridiculous  if you ask me. Berlin was one big example to start with, just 2 weeks ago the article about the fine of 1 mil. AUSD for shops in Australia for selling brakeless bikes and apparently now a new law in Japan is kicking in. Let’s hope it’s just a rumour.

“Jan 4th BGN Network: Japan has announced a nationwide ban on fixed gear bicycles. According to sources, any and ALL persons found in possession or riding a Fixed Gear (otherwise known as fixie, track, NJS, fixed) will have their cycle confiscated and fined ni-man go-sen yen 25,000Yen or equivalent of nearly $300! In addition to the banning, all fixed gear bicycles are declared ILLEGAL and UNSAFE, clearing the way for a maximum penalty law to be put into immediate effect.”

Hi there – this post is written largely ‘tongue in cheek’ – however, it is based largely on both events and current ‘crackdown’ state of affairs here in Japan. Fact: It is illegal for bikeshops in Japan to sell bikes without brakes. Fact: It is illegal now even for a bikeshop to WORK on a bike that doesn’t have brakes. Fact: The Japanese Police are taking a very serious ‘crackdown’ approach on Fixie riders and pulling them over for no reason other than to inspect for the brakes. The current fine is about $300 and people are getting these. Fact: The Japanese Keirin Association sponsors many ‘funride’ and other non-sanctioned races, yet those same events ban Fixed Gear Cycles! I know, I was pulled off my bike, very dangerously, by an overzealous race marshal. It was one of the most disturbing and disgusting events in my entire cycling career of riding (races included) for more than 25yrs! I’ve NEVER had a RACE MARSHAL physically abuse me!

Somehow, somewhere, the ‘fixie’ rider has struck a hooligan chord with the Japanese Police. They see FG rider in the same context as the gang associated groups loosely called bozozouku – which are notorious for racing un-muffler motorcycles around and raising general mayhem including mini riots, fights, theft and other petty crimes. Thus – Fixies have become the nail which must be hammered down. And the Japanese Police know how to hammer!
